34-year-old Nigerian-born hockey player Akim Aliu, a longtime NHL critic and diversity advocate, has been offered a tryout contract by the San Jose Sharks' American Hockey League (AHL) team, the San Jose Barracuda. Aliu gained prominence in 2019 after confronting racism in hockey, leading to the implementation of a personal conduct policy in the NHL and the creation of the Hockey Diversity Alliance.
