South Carolina is planning to extract more toxic waste from a WWII aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown, in Charleston Harbor. The removal of over 1.2 million gallons of petroleum and hazardous materials is part of an $18 million remediation effort. The USS Yorktown has been a popular tourist attraction since its donation to the decommissioned Navy in 1975. However, the increased potential for leaky tanks poses a threat to the surrounding waters.
