Australia's energy market regulator warns of potential gas shortages in southeast Australia during winter 2023 due to declining production from the Bass Strait, which historically supplied two-thirds of the region's gas. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has highlighted the need for investment in pipeline and storage upgrades, renewable gases, and infrastructure projects to meet demand from 2025 onwards. Temporary relief could be provided by running gas-powered generators on liquid fuels during periods of high demand.
