UN mission to investigate ISIS war crimes in Iraq closes early due to deteriorating ties with the Iraqi government.
The United Nations (UN) mission helping Iraq investigate alleged Islamic State (IS) genocide and war crimes is being forced to close prematurely due to a deterioration in its relationship with the Iraqi government. UNITAD, established in 2017, has contributed to at least three convictions on charges of genocide and other international crimes in Germany and Portugal. Critics argue that the mission's closure will hinder efforts to hold more ISIS members accountable, and cast doubts over Iraq's commitment to holding ISIS members accountable for their crimes.
