Rare endangered pygmy hippo born at Athens' Attica Zoological Park, first in a decade.

Athens' Attica Zoological Park has welcomed the birth of a rare and endangered pygmy hippo, marking the first birth in the zoo in a decade. The birth of a male calf is particularly significant as there were few male pygmy hippos in captivity, complicating breeding efforts. Pygmy hippos are native to swamps and rainforests in western Africa and are listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with an estimated 2,000-2,500 individuals remaining in the wild. The male calf, weighing 7 kg, was born on February 19 and is the only pygmy hippo at the zoo.
