Nuclear fusion backers in Washington discuss attracting more funding for research

Nuclear fusion backers are convening in Washington, D.C. to discuss ways to attract more funding for research and avoid falling behind China in developing commercially viable reactors. A recent funding bill signed by President Biden allocated $790m for fusion science programs in 2024, but the industry states that over $1bn is needed. Fusion, the process that powers the sun, could provide carbon-free electricity, unlike fission plants which produce long-lasting radioactive waste.
