New York state authorizes pharmacists to dispense hormonal contraception without prescriptions.

New York state has authorized pharmacists to provide hormonal contraception without a prescription following Governor Kathy Hochul signing a standing order. Trained pharmacists can now dispense oral birth control pills, vaginal rings, and patches up to a 12-month supply without prescriptions. They must complete training developed by the state Education Department beforehand and must notify the patient's primary healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of dispensing the medication. This move aims to improve access to contraception, protect reproductive rights, and address health equity in NYS.
