India's government establishes the Fact Check Unit (FCU) under IT Rules 2021, authorizing it to monitor online content related to the central government and label content as "fake" or "misleading,"

India's government has notified the Press Information Bureau's (PIB) Fact Check Unit (FCU) under the Information Technology (IT) Rules of 2021. The FCU will be the government's authorised unit to monitor online content related to the central government and will have the authority to label content as "fake" or "misleading." Content flagged by the FCU will need to be removed by social media platforms to retain their "safe harbor" status, which provides legal immunity against third-party content. The notification comes after the Bombay High Court declined a petition to restrain the government from notifying the FCU.
