Allegheny County Jail in Pennsylvania has reached a legal settlement to improve mental health treatment, staffing levels, use-of-force, and solitary confinement practices. The 38-page agreement, addressing inadequate treatment and medication for inmates with mental health disabilities, requires the jail to increase mental health positions to around 47, with 30 requiring independent licensure. Training for staff on recognizing mental illness, appropriate use of force, and de-escalation techniques is also mandated.
