Pearse McAuley, a convicted IRA killer linked to the 1996 murder of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe, has been found dead at his home in Strabane, Co Tyrone at the age of 59. McAuley was sentenced to 14 years in jail for the manslaughter of Detective McCabe, who was killed during a post office robbery in Adare, Co Limerick in 1996. Sinn Féin had previously attempted to have him and others jailed for the Garda killing released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.
