Cherry blossoms in Japan and the US are blooming earlier due to warmer temperatures from climate change, disrupting a spring tradition in major cities. Cherry trees in Tokyo started blooming on average March 29 between 1961-90, but between 1991-2020, the date moved up to March 24, with Tokyo's sakura blooming first in Japan in 2020. The average date of blossoming has advanced 1.2 days per decade since 1953.
