Australian government increases paid parental leave to 26 weeks by 2026, aiming to improve female workforce participation and boost the economy.

The Australian government has approved increased paid parental leave to 26 weeks by 2026, aiming to improve female workforce participation and boost the economy. This change will create more equity and flexibility for caregiving roles and benefit over 180,000 families annually. The scheme, expected to cost $4.4 billion a year from 2026/27, will provide four weeks of leave for each parent on a "use it or lose it" basis and allow parents to take four weeks of leave simultaneously. Employers will see this payment as a workplace entitlement rather than welfare.
