Photographer David Johnson, a key chronicler of San Francisco's Black culture and the first Black student of famous nature photographer Ansel Adams, has passed away at the age of 97. Johnson was known for capturing unposed and candid images of the city's thriving Black community, which was later forced to leave due to redevelopment. His work is archived at the Bancroft Library at University of California, Berkeley.
