2023 research suggests that chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer, elk, and other cervids may pose a greater risk to human health than previously believed, with prions potentially evolving to infect humans. Over 32 states, four Canadian provinces, and four foreign countries have reported CWD cases. A rapid test for CWD in deer is a key focus for prevention, as between 7,000 and 15,000 infected animals are unknowingly consumed by hunters annually.
