Invasive hemlock woolly adelgid detected in Michigan's Huron-Manistee National Forests for the first time.
The invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) has been detected in Michigan's Huron-Manistee National Forests for the first time. The insect was found at Hamlin Lake and the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area in Mason County. Officials used DNA trap locations to focus their detection survey efforts. Treatment of infested trees and areas is possible, but preventing the spread of the HWA is challenging, and there is a high chance that many hemlocks will die.
