Housing charity Threshold calls for a register for short-term lets like Airbnb in Ireland, aiming to free long-term homes and introduce fines up to €5,000 for non-registration.

Housing charity Threshold calls for a register for short-term lets in Ireland, such as Airbnb rentals, ahead of the 2024 tourist season. The group claims that a significant number of houses that could be long-term homes are instead being let to tourists. The European Parliament has adopted a regulation aiming to streamline data collection and sharing obligations for online rental platforms, with proposed legislation introducing registration requirements for property owners of short-term lets and fines of up to €5,000 for non-registration, as well as penalties for online platforms advertising unregistered properties. Fáilte Ireland estimates that up to 12,000 properties could be reintroduced to the long-term rental market upon enactment of these regulations.
