Heriot-Watt University and Great Central Plastics developed lateral flow tests using recycled plastics to reduce medical waste and carbon emissions.

Heriot-Watt University and Great Central Plastics created lateral flow tests (LFTs) from recycled plastics, including "post-consumer" chewing gum and old fridge components. The project aims to cut medical waste, with over four billion LFTs manufactured annually and 16,000 tonnes of plastic used globally for rapid testing. If creating LFTs from sustainable materials becomes common, carbon emissions could be reduced by 30-80%.
