64-year-old Utah man David Macfarlane died in an avalanche while backcountry skiing in western Montana near Lost Trail Pass on the Montana-Idaho border, according to Ravalli County officials. Macfarlane was caught in the snow slide with four other skiers from Utah, and despite first aid and satellite communication device assistance, he died from his injuries before search and rescue teams arrived. This is the first avalanche death in Montana for this winter and the 12th avalanche death in the U.S. according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
