Gerald Levin, a key figure in Time Warner's rise as a 20th-century media powerhouse, has passed away at age 84. Levin was instrumental in transforming Home Box Office into a pay-for-view giant and orchestrated Time's merger with Warner Communications in 1990. However, he is perhaps best known for the ill-fated 2000 merger with AOL, which ultimately led to a quarterly loss of $54 billion and was considered one of the worst corporate mergers in US history.
