Study finds US veterans with mild traumatic brain injuries from explosive blasts in Afghanistan and Iraq may have increased Alzheimer's risk due to cerebrospinal fluid protein changes.

A study by the University of Washington School of Medicine and VA Puget Sound Health Care System suggests US veterans with mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) from explosive blasts in Afghanistan and Iraq may have an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. The study, published in Neurology, found veterans with mTBI had changes in cerebrospinal fluid proteins similar to those with Alzheimer's. Though the research does not prove a direct link, it suggests veterans with mTBI may be on a pathway leading to dementia.
