President Irfaan Ali announced plans to develop the University of Guyana's National Defence Institute (NDI) into a premier security institution in the region, serving the 15-nation Caribbean Community, Brazil, and potentially personnel from Venezuela. The NDI aims to integrate leaders for security and defense leadership and is set to be established during the first half of 2024. The university has received the prestigious 2023 Perry Award for Excellence in Security and Defense Education for its role in fostering security and defense education in the region.
