Johns Hopkins researchers developed ARTEMIS, a method using machine learning to analyze "junk DNA" repeat elements in the human genome. This method can detect cancer or monitor treatment response by identifying changes in these elements in cell-free DNA (cfDNA) shed from tumors. The findings, published in Science Translational Medicine, could lead to noninvasive cancer detection methods.
