Ireland referred to ECJ for alleged failure to protect raised and blanket bog habitats from turf cutting.
Ireland has been referred to the European Court of Justice for allegedly failing to protect raised bog and blanket bog habitats from turf cutting. The European Commission has said that Ireland has not fully addressed the shortcomings and has failed to apply the Habitats Directive to protect these designated sites. The Commission has been warning Ireland since 2011 about this issue, stating that while some restoration work has been undertaken on raised bog sites, no action has been taken regarding blanket bog sites.
