140 cherry trees to be removed for $113m seawall repair in Washington, D.C.'s Tidal Basin.
140 iconic cherry trees in Washington, D.C.'s Tidal Basin will be removed to make way for a $113m seawall repair project. The National Park Service said it would begin the project in late May, with 300 trees set to be replaced in total over the next three years. The ageing seawalls, which were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, have sunk by up to five feet and are no longer effective against tidal waves and storm surges.
