Alberta proposes a new independent, civilian-overseen police force alongside existing agencies and RCMP.

Alberta introduces bill to create new stand-alone police force alongside existing municipal and First Nations police agencies, and the RCMP. The new police force, if passed, will be independent and subject to civilian oversight. Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis stresses the move is not about abandoning the RCMP and there is no timeline for when the new police force will be created. The bill also proposes electronic ankle-bracelet monitoring.
