The Utah Dept of Corrections discriminated against a transgender inmate by denying hormone therapy, leading to self-surgery and DOJ demands for policy changes and training.
The Utah Department of Corrections was found to have discriminated against a transgender inmate, denying her hormone therapy in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to a federal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. As a result of the discrimination, the incarcerated trans woman's psychological distress worsened, leading her to perform a dangerous self-surgery to remove her own testicles. The DOJ now demands immediate policy changes and anti-discrimination training for all Utah correctional officers.
