1st day of Cheltenham Festival: Highland Hunter dies from injury during Ultima Handicap Chase, first horse death this year.
On the first day of Cheltenham Festival, horse Highland Hunter suffered a fatal injury during the Ultima Handicap Chase event and passed away. This marks the first horse death at this year's festival. Highland Hunter had previously been ridden daily by 25-year-old amateur jockey Keagan Kirkby, who died in a fall during a point-to-point event in Kent back in February.
