Former NHL player Anson Carter leads a bid to bring an expansion team to Atlanta, where two previous teams, the Flames (1972-1980) and the Thrashers (1999-2011), have relocated. Carter's group, Alpharetta Sports & Entertainment, submitted a formal request to the NHL to commence the process of adding an expansion team in the Atlanta metro area. The NHL currently has 32 teams and is not actively pursuing expansion, but is open to discussing the idea with interested groups.
