Berkeley City Council returns 2.2-acre parking lot on top of 5,700-year-old Ohlone tribal shell mound to the Ohlone people, following a settlement with developers Ruegg & Ellsworth LLC. The land will be transferred to the Sogorea Te' Land Trust, a women-led collective that works to return land to Indigenous people, after a six-year legal battle. The trust plans to build a commemorative park with a new shell mound and a cultural center to house artifacts found at the site.
