European Parliament adopts stricter greenwashing rules, including penalties and evidence requirements for green claims.
The European Parliament has adopted stricter rules against greenwashing, with companies potentially facing penalties like temporary bars from public procurement tenders and fines worth at least 4% of annual revenue. The new Green Claims Directive requires businesses to submit evidence before advertising products as "biodegradable," "less polluting," or having "bio-based content." EU nations must assign verifiers to pre-approve such claims, and green claims based solely on carbon offsetting schemes will remain banned.
