Liverpool City Council closed St Johns Market due to unpaid £1.7m rent and service charges from 2020.

Liverpool City Council has closed St Johns Market after attempting to recover £1.7m of unpaid rent and service charges from the market's tenants dating back to 2020. The council said it had offered traders negotiations over the repayment of the debt but did not receive a meaningful response. St Johns Market, founded in 1822, costs the council £1m a year to subsidise and has seen a failed refurbishment in 2016.
