The European Union has reached a compromise on a labor plan for gig economy workers, allowing individual countries to decide when a worker should count as an employee and qualify for benefits. The European Commission hopes this so-called platform work directive will lead to a clearer definition of workers' rights including minimum wages, sick pay, and holiday pay. The regulation also limits the use of algorithms, banning the firing of workers based on decisions made by automated systems.
