600-person Marlborough settlement's stopbanks at "catastrophic" risk, repairs costing $8.7M required after earthquake and flood damage.

Two Marlborough stopbanks protecting a 600-person settlement are at "catastrophic" risk of failure, with repairs estimated at $8.7 million. One stopbank showed signs of cracking after the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, and the other started cracking in the July 2021 floods. A council report warns that until the work is undertaken, the stopbanks remain at an elevated risk of failing, with an internal loss of stability during the peak of floods.
