Illinois has been ranked the worst state to be poor in by WalletHub, due to its high 13.95% tax rate for low-income earners and high cost of living. In contrast, Michigan ranks 9th as the best state to be poor in with lower tax rates and cost of living. 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, with high taxes and varying costs of living affecting low-income individuals in different states.
