Female representation in US statehouses remains low, particularly among Democrats in the South. West Virginia is at the bottom of the list with 16 women in its 134-member Legislature, only 12%. This is compared to Nevada where women occupy over 60% of state legislative seats. In 10 states, women make up less than 25% of their state legislatures, according to Rutgers' Centre for American Women in Politics.
