A man, David Ian Charles Coles, has been jailed for eight years after pleading guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter for shooting a prison escapee, Nicholas Scott, during a scuffle at a home near Hobart. Scott had absconded from police guard at the Royal Hobart Hospital and arrived at a friend's house, where Coles, armed with a loaded double-barrel shotgun, intervened to protect Scott's friend. The situation escalated, resulting in Scott striking Coles with a bottle and Coles shooting Scott in the chest at close range.
