Japan's current account balance surpassed expectations in January 2024, recording a surplus of 438.2 billion JPY compared to the predicted 330.4 billion JPY surplus. The adjusted current account balance was 2.727 trillion JPY, higher than the anticipated 2.074 trillion JPY. The trade balance, however, showed a deficit of 1.442 trillion JPY, which was slightly higher than the expected 1.483 trillion JPY deficit. The positive current account balance demonstrates that Japan is exporting more than it is importing, effectively lending to the rest of the world.
