India's Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Pralhad Joshi, expects the country to achieve its 1 billion tonne coal output target by the end of the financial year 2023-24. Coal stock with thermal power plants is projected to reach 45 million tonnes by the end of March, and the government aims to produce 105 million tonnes of coking coal by 2030. The share of coal imports in total consumption has reduced to 19% in 2023-24, down from 26% in 2019, with the government planning to stop thermal coal imports by FY26.
