2023 global patent filings declined by 1.8% due to economic uncertainty and higher interest rates, as reported by WIPO.

Global patent filings fell for the first time in 14 years in 2023, declining by 1.8% due to economic uncertainty and higher interest rates, as reported by the UN's World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). China and the United States saw a decrease in patent filings, while India and South Korea bucked the trend, reporting increases in intellectual property (IP) filings. WIPO's chief economist Carsten Fink suggested that the decline is likely cyclical and will improve as the external environment does.
