Meta enables WhatsApp, Messenger interoperability with third-party apps under EU's DMA.

Meta is opening WhatsApp and Messenger to third-party messaging apps to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). The company will use its existing client/server architecture to enable interoperability with text-based messages and secure chats, using the Signal protocol. Third-party providers must sign an agreement before implementing interoperability, with support for group chats and calls expected to expand over time.
