Illinois Senate approves plan to elect 10 of 21 Chicago Public Schools board members.

The Illinois Senate has approved a plan backed by Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) to elect 10 of 21 Chicago Public Schools board members in November's general election. The new structure will allow Johnson to appoint a Chicago Board of Education president and 10 board seats, while residents vote on the other 10 seats. The CTU had previously advocated for a fully elected board under Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
