43-year-old inmate Danilo De Silva, serving a three-year sentence for assaulting a sex worker in 2000, was found dead in his cell at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin, with no signs of foul play. De Silva was also on remand for serious sexual offences and a robbery, and was expected to go on trial for these charges. The Irish Prison Service, Inspector of Prisons, and gardai launched an investigation into the death.
