Deputy Speaker Dame Eleanor Laing chaired the UK's spring budget on 6 March 2024, as Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced taxation and spending plans. Laing is the Deputy Speaker, known as Chairman of Ways and Means, serving since 2013 and as the senior Deputy Speaker since 2020. Historically, Speakers were in an untenable position due to representing the King's interests to the House and vice versa, so instead, the Deputy Speaker chairs the budget.
