Researchers found that African elephantnose fish may instantaneously share sensory information, enhancing perception in groups.
Researchers at Columbia's Zuckerman Institute discovered that African weakly electric fish, or elephantnose fish, may share sensory information within their group almost instantly. This collective sensing could help fish locate food, friends, and foes. The electric fish, which sense their environment using electrical pulses, seem to have an enhanced perception when in a group, similar to collaborative systems used in human-engineered technologies like sonar and radar.
