Optus fined AUD 1.5 million for failing to upload customer info to Integrated Public Number Database, putting 200,000 customers at risk.

Telco giant Optus has been fined AUD 1.5 million for large-scale breaches of public safety rules in Australia. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found that Optus failed to upload required customer information to the Integrated Public Number Database (IPND) between January 2021 and September 2023, potentially putting 200,000 customers at risk. The IPND is used by emergency services to warn Australians of disasters and to provide location information to police, ambulance, and fire services in an emergency.
