French government limits free access to Paris Olympics opening ceremony due to security concerns.
Due to security concerns, the French government has announced that tourists will not be allowed to watch the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics for free, as initially planned. Free access will now be invitation-only, with 104,000 ticket holders watching from the lower riverbanks and another 222,000 watching for free from the upper banks. Access will be allocated via quotas to select residents of towns hosting Olympic events, local sports federations, and others chosen by organizers or their partners. This marks the first time an Olympics opening ceremony will be held outside a stadium setting.
