HIV antiretrovirals can safely be taken with gender-affirming hormone therapy, according to new research.
New research shows that HIV antiretrovirals can safely be taken with gender-affirming hormone therapy without affecting the efficacy of either drug. The first head-to-head pharmacokinetic analysis of two common HIV medications and long-term feminizing hormone therapy use, published in Clinical and Translational Science, aims to reassure patients and healthcare providers that it is safe to continue HIV medications alongside hormone regimens. Transgender women are 50 times more likely to contract HIV than the general population, and stopping HIV medication can have long-term consequences.
