FDA approves first OTC birth control pill, Opill, for U.S. retailers.

The FDA has approved the first U.S. over-the-counter (OTC) birth control pill, Opill, which is more effective than condoms, spermicides, and other non-prescription methods. Opill, an older class of contraceptive called minipills containing a single synthetic hormone, progestin, is now available at major retailers and pharmacies across the U.S. for $20 for a one-month supply and $50 for a three-month supply. The launch of Opill offers U.S. women another birth control option amid ongoing legal and political battles over reproductive health, including the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
