1/5 Mekong River fish species face extinction due to dam-building, sand mining, and habitat loss, report says.
One-fifth of Mekong River fish species are facing extinction, according to a report by a coalition of regional and international environmental groups. The Mekong, one of the world's most biodiverse rivers, is home to 1,148 recognized species of fish and plays a crucial role in the livelihoods of millions across six Asian countries. Threats to the river's fish populations include dam-building, sand mining, poorly managed fisheries, habitat loss, and the introduction of non-native species.
