Food giant Nestlé is funding health research in South African universities, sparking concerns over potential conflicts of interest. In 2021, the director of the Centre of Excellence in Food Security at the University of Pretoria joined Nestlé's board, and the centre signed a memorandum of understanding with the company. A 2017 study revealed that industry funding often leads researchers to favor corporations, either consciously or unconsciously.
